Music

What can I say about it?

Well for starters, I loooooooove & can’t live without it! I dance to it, I sing along to it (when no one is around) it’s been part of my life since I was in the womb (so I’ve been told) and I don’t trust anyone that doesn’t like/listen to music (I’ve met a few, they do exist) Weird!

How does that quote go? “Without music, life would be a mistake” I strongly agree!

Think about it, if music did not exist, the world would seem quieter or maybe louder?? Hmmmm…It’s up for debate.

We listen to music for tons of reasons, one being wanting to escape the noise of everyday life. We want to get lost in all those beats, melodies, lyrics, etc… It’s like a therapeutic recharge.

Music has the power to enhance or calm our moods no matter what we’re feeling. It can inspire us to do incredible things for ourselves or others. It helps us focus and create. It carries memories that we hold dear to us. It can move us to pieces in a matter of seconds (you know, the chills you feel)

It’s also a VERY important element in cinema. Imagine your favorite film and the music in it, now imagine it without the music…Not the same, right?!? The music creates the suspense, intensity, drama and the movement of the film. So yes, it’s VERY important!

Speaking of movement, music makes you want to move & dance (I’m 100% guilty of this one) I mean, you just can’t help it right?!?

Some people see colors when listening to music, I don’t fully understand that but I find it fascinating. When I listen to music, I imagine choreography. This tends to happen naturally without even thinking about it. With so many years of dancing and choreographing under my belt, this is embedded in my DNA. Of course this doesn’t happen all the time but it does happen a lot.

Let’s also not forget about those live shows, where you go to absorb music on a whole other level. I’ve been going to shows/concerts for the past 20 years or so. Could I or will I ever stop? Probably not! There’s nothing like the sound of live instruments and live vocals pulsating through huge speakers, it just takes over your soul! Also, the experience you’re sharing with great friends/family and the timeless memories.

Then we have all the different formats in which we have consumed our music.

I come from a generation known as Generation X or if you want to get technical I’m a Xenial (1977-1983) I read that somewhere…

Growing up, vinyl seemed to be on it’s way out and cassette tapes were the new thing. You’d pop them into your boombox or your Walkman & off you went.

Then came CDs (I still have my massive collection) I remember getting excited about new releases (Tuesday’s) and heading out to Tower Records (R.I.P.) and The Virgin Megastore (R.I.P.) This was our social network. We’d go with friends and hang out for hours and sometimes make new friends based on our music tastes. We would explore all those listening stations & get lost in it. When we were all done, we would leave with a couple of CDs and maybe a magazine.

Then came MP3’s. Small enough to fit thousands of songs in the palm of your hand, you just plug and go (iPods) And now we have streaming, on our phones, computers, TVs, etc… crazy!!

But somewhere between MP3’s and streaming, vinyl re-emerged and became a thing again. Talk about full circle!

What will be next? I guess we’ll have to wait & see.
